10 Life-Changing Business Lessons I Learned from Ted Lasso

by | Dec 18, 2024

Ted Lasso is one of those TV shows that I watch over and over. Every time I watch it, it meets me where I’m at and I always see something in a new perspective. It can be a funny, feel-good show but it’s filled with perspective and lessons on how to engage with the world around you – personally and professionally.

Grab your favorite mug and settle in, because we’re about to dive into 10 life-changing lessons I learned from the one and only Ted Lasso. (Seriously, if you haven’t watched it yet, what are you waiting for?!)

1. Be a goldfish. (Seriously!) Remember Ted’s pep talk about goldfish having a 10-second memory? It’s not about actually forgetting everything. It’s about resilience. Entrepreneurs face setbacks all the time – a launch that flops, a client who ghosts, a proposal that gets rejected. It stings, right? But dwelling on these moments only paralyzes us. Acknowledge the lesson, dust yourself off, and move forward. Like a goldfish, swim on to the next opportunity!

2. Kindness is always a good play. Ted’s relentless kindness, even when faced with skepticism and outright hostility, is a masterclass in emotional intelligence. Think about how you interact with your clients, your team, even your competitors. A little empathy and genuine care can build strong relationships, foster loyalty, and create a positive work environment that everyone thrives in. In business, kindness isn’t just nice; it’s smart.

3. Believe in yourself, even when no one else does. Ted arrived at AFC Richmond knowing absolutely nothing about soccer. He faced doubt, ridicule, and constant pressure. Yet, his unwavering self-belief was infectious. He knew his strengths, focused on his vision, and eventually, his optimism won everyone over. As a small business owner, you’ll face moments of doubt. Remember Ted. Believe in your vision, trust your skills, and keep pushing forward. You are capable of amazing things.

4. It’s okay to not be okay. Even eternally optimistic Ted Lasso has his vulnerable moments. He shows us that it’s alright to acknowledge our struggles, ask for help, and prioritize mental health. The entrepreneurial journey can be isolating and overwhelming at times. Don’t try to be a superhero. Reach out to your support network, talk to a mentor, or seek professional help when needed. Taking care of yourself is crucial for both your personal well-being and your business success.

5. Build genuine connections. Those biscuits Ted baked for Rebecca weren’t just treats; they were a symbol of his genuine desire to connect. In a world of automated everything, personal touches stand out. How can you create meaningful connections with your clients? A handwritten thank-you note? A personalized video message? Remembering their birthday? These small gestures build strong, lasting relationships and foster loyalty.

6. Celebrate the small wins. Building a thriving business is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s easy to get caught up in the big goals and overlook the small victories along the way. Did you land a new client? Finish a major project? Reach a social media milestone? Celebrate it! Acknowledging these wins keeps you motivated, boosts your confidence, and reminds you of how far you’ve come.

7. Be curious, not judgmental. Ted’s inherent curiosity allowed him to truly understand the people around him, even those who seemed difficult at first. Instead of judging quickly, he asked questions, listened attentively, and sought to understand their perspectives. Apply this to your business: be genuinely curious about your clients – their needs, challenges, and aspirations. This deeper understanding will allow you to serve them better and create truly valuable offerings.

8. Embrace change (and grow with it). Ted’s arrival at AFC Richmond shook things up. Change can be unsettling, but it’s also an opportunity for growth. The business world is constantly evolving, and your ability to adapt is crucial. Embrace new technologies, explore different marketing strategies, and be open to pivoting your approach when needed. Change isn’t something to fear; it’s a chance to evolve and thrive.

9. Find the fun! Entrepreneurship is hard work, but it doesn’t have to be all seriousness and stress. Inject some fun into your daily routine. Play your favorite music while working, celebrate successes with your team (even virtually!), or take breaks to pursue hobbies that bring you joy. When you enjoy what you do, it shines through in your work and attracts positive energy.

10. Don’t settle for less than what you deserve. Ted knew his worth and didn’t let anyone diminish it. He advocated for himself and his team. You should do the same. Know your value, set clear boundaries, and don’t be afraid to negotiate fair prices for your services. Your expertise and dedication deserve to be recognized and rewarded.
